Even a small increase in demand for water can deplete a small pond or stream, increasing the expense of operating the field. Further, ditches are expensive to build and expensive to install. Typically, ditches are expensive to dig, and installing a ditch requires the laying of a long continuous pipe, e.g., a culvert. In addition, ditches are particularly expensive to maintain and have no tendency to self-repair.
